Banana in Coconut Gravy – Keralean Kela Karry

Oil                                            1 ts

Mustard Seeds                        1 ts

Cumin Seeds                          1 ts

Curry Leaves

Onion                                      1

(cut in 2 pcs and separate layers)

Capsicum chopped 8 pcs.       1

Ginger-Garlic Paste                1 ts

Ripe Banana chopped 1

Tamarind Pulp                         1 ts

Turmeric Powder                     Pinch

Salt to taste

Coconut Cream                       ½ cup

Black Pepper Powder             Pinch

Cashew Nuts pieces fried       2 tbsp

Coconut grated                       1 tbsp


Heat oil in a pan. Add Mustard Seeds, Cumin Seeds and Curry Leaves. When spluttered, add Onion, Capsicum and Ginger-Garlic Paste. Fry it until Onion becomes soft. Add chopped Banana, Tamarind Pulp, Turmeric Powder and Salt. Mix well taking care not mashing Banana. Cook on low flame for 5-7 minutes. Add little water. Add Coconut Cream and continue cooking for another 2-3 minutes turning over the stuff slowly not mashing Banana. Add Black Pepper Powder and Cashew Nuts. Mix well.


Garnish with grated Coconut to give sure look of Kerala Cuisine.


Serve with boiled or steamed Rice.
